The Perfect Business Card In 9 Easy Steps!

So you’ve branded your new business and created the perfect logo. So what’s next? Well if you’re like businesses of all kinds worldwide, you’ll need a business card. Not one that people are going to throw away or shove in their wallet only to throw away later when cleaning it out, but one that people are going to love and remember. You want your business to be remembered for the right reasons and sometimes this small piece of paper will do the trick. We’ve helped design more than one in our time so we thought we would put together our favorite tips on how to perfect the art of designing the perfect business card.

  1. If you want to create your own, pick a design program you’re comfortable with. Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign, Microsoft PowerPoint and Microsoft Word are just some of the many programs that offer simple yet intricate templates for business cards. Save yourself some frustration and be sure to be honest you’re yourself and your experience level

  2. Remember a standard business card is 2.5 x 3 inches, and the paper quality should be the best. Don’t in any circumstance use paper that is thin, or flimsy. Remember you’ll be putting these out for the world to see and you don’t want them getting ripped or smeared as soon as people pick them up.

  3. Choose your colors wisely. There are some colors that just won’t go together no matter how hard you try. Don’t be afraid to come back to the design too if you’re really struggling to pick out colors. We recommend using one color scheme (most likely the one chosen when coming up with your brand) and sticking with it.

  4. Add a logo. Okay, this may seem like common sense but you’d be surprised at the number of business cards we see without a logo on them. Your logo should portray the overall image of your brand and let customers know who you are.

  5. Be sure people can actually read the business cards. Choose text that customers can read easily and quickly. Try not to get too fancy and stick to the fonts that translate well even in color. We recommend using two or three fonts altogether and test it out. See if you can read it because the chances are if you can’t, your customer can’t.

  6. Utilize the front and back of your card. Short and sweet. This way your card won’t be cluttered on one side and you can spread your information out evenly. Ideally, your business card needs to contain a lot of information so don’t crowd it all in one place.

  7. On that note, less is more. We may have just talked about all that information you need to add but don’t make it overwhelming. Address the items that every person needs to know (most likely name, address, phone number, etc.) and leave off the smaller details.

  8. Test it out. Print a few and have others look it over. Ask a friend or a family member to see what they think and apply their critiques. No one wants to print 500 only to realize they have a word spelled wrong.

  9. Print your final copy and let them fly. You’ve did it! You’ve made the perfect business card so it is time to distribute them and let the business roll in. And if you didn’t quite make it to step nine, you know where to find us.
