What’s the difference between EquiPod’s microcurrent therapy and PEMF?

There is a ton of information out there on both microcurrent and PEMF devices. When trying to decide whether to go with microcurrent versus PEMF for treating your horse, it can be a daunting task to sort through why one would be a better fit for you than the other. In this post we’ll try to explain, as simply as possible, what each is so you can make the most informed decision based on effectiveness, ease of use, and cost.

This isn’t to say you can’t use or have both types of devices, just throwing that out there up front. We love our gadgets too!

First, what is microcurrent and PEMF?

Microcurrent is a gentle electrical current applied directly to the body in the range of 0-500 microamps (µA) that is typically subsensory (cannot be physically felt).

PEMF is a pulsed electromagnetic field that enters the body with or without the need for direct contact (like a MRI machine). The strength of the magnetic field is expressed in units of Tesla (T) or microtesla (µT) and varies widely in strengths from subsensory to intense physical sensation.

What does science say about each as it pertains to therapeutic effects in a living being?

Extensive research and case studies have been done over the last 40-plus years for the benefits and effectiveness of each. Since all living beings are recognized as using electrical energy, both microcurrent and ultra-low frequency PEMF provide similar benefits in the body such as:

Reduction of inflammation and associated pain. Increased production of ATP (the body’s currency for repair and regeneration). Increased ionic flow and cell membrane transport (accelerated recovery). Pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) therapy is a type of physical stimulation that affects biological systems by producing interfering or coherent fields. Given that cell types are significantly distinct, which represents an important factor in stimulation, and that PEMFs can have different effects in terms of frequency and intensity, time of exposure, and waveform, it can be tough to know how to use a device safely and effectively. While PEMF at ultra-low frequencies is considered safe, at the higher end there is risk for damage.
