US DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE
Horses being imported to the US have varied requirements depending on the residency of the horse for the 60 days prior to departure to the US, disease status of the country of origin, and purpose for entry.
Following the below link will allow you to choose your horse’s country of origin from a drop-down menu and show you exact requirements: USDA
All horses traveling abroad must undergo a quarantine period of 3, 7, or 60 days depending on the country of origin (exemptions are US horses traveling between Canada and the US). Horses entering from the EU require 3 days of quarantine which is our most common import.
While in quarantine, horses must test negative for Dourine, Glanders, Equine Piroplasmosis, and Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA).
Mares and Stallions 731 days of age and over require additional quarantine of approximately 17 and 31 days respectively, where they must test negative for Contagious Equine Metritis (CEM). Follow the link for further details on CEM: USDA
Horses testing positive for any of the above diseases will be refused entry into the US.
Vaccinations must not be administered within 14 days prior to exportation from origin country.
